Trading of links is one of the best ways to generate more traffic and improve search engine ranking.
Google grants higher page rank to those site who have a higher amount of quality links pointing back at them. When we say higher quality links we are referring to those links that are from a site with a higher page rank and specific content that matches the site linked to. For instance a site that has new casino information is not likely to help a web design site out as much as say another site that handles web development or even internet marketing.
Also a lower number of links on the page is better in order to keep from diluting the relevence of the links. Generally 20 is about as much as should be listed on one page. Sites that are free for all link pages are not usually very acceptable as references.
Google also takes links pointing from sites that are experts in a particular field and gives them much higher weight. If you were to get a link returned from ticketmaster.com to your venue site then you would receive much more weight than a joe schmo viagra sales site.
